1) Get Your Beat Right
You may be able to get away with selling average beats to average singers/rappers, but if you want to be taken seriously, then you need to perfect your beats before selling them.
No real music artist is going to pay you any attention if your arrangement is messy and your sounds haven’t been mixed and mastered properly. You can purchase sound kits that are already mastered to exceptional quality.
If you’re a beginner, then use a basic DAW (Digital Audio Workstation / beat making software) such as DubTurbo to get to grips with music production. If you’re more experienced, then use advanced DAWs such as Fruity Loops, Cubase and Reason.
2) Do Online Marketing
To get yourself noticed to a wider audience, you need to do effective online marketing. Essentially, you need to create a brand out of yourself and your music for people to easily identify.
There are so many amateur beat makers that don’t take marketing seriously. Just by having a website, you’re already putting yourself ahead of them. Later on when you work on a direct selling basis, you can command a higher price for your beats if you were to sell through your website as opposed to selling on a third party platform.
Having a website is one thing, but no one will find it if you don’t spread the word. Make good use out of social media platforms such as Reddit, Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. Things won’t happen overnight but the key to success is to be smart and stay consistent.
3) Decide Between Lease & Exclusive

- Lease: This means you can sell your beat to as many different music artists as you want, usually for a low price.
- Exclusive: Or you can sell your beat exclusively to one music artist for a much higher price.
When it comes to selling beats online, leasing beats tend to do better because it requires less effort as you can sell the same beat over and over.
For example, you can lease your beat for $30 to 10 artists, making a total of $300. Or you can sell your beat to one artist for $300, but it’s a lot harder if you don’t have a big enough name and/or you don’t directly work with your clients.
4) List Your Beats
Once you have your beats perfected and you’ve decided how you want to sell your beats, you need to find the most suitable platforms to list them. I would recommend listing your beats to a few reputable places such as SoundCloud and SoundClick.
Each website has different commission structures and audiences so do a bit of research to find out which one suits your music best. If you have a website with a shopping cart installed, you can even list them there (and avoid paying commissions) or you may prefer just use your website as a marketing tool instead.
5) Build & Maintain Relationships
One of the most important things in the music industry is building long term relationships. The more you work on your networking and social skills, then less time you’ll have to spend finding new clients. This means you can spend more time doing what you love doing, making beats for your existing clients.
It’s not enough to just make a beat, list it, make a sale to a random person and repeat. That’s not the smart way to work. You must seek out real music artists that are serious about their career and work directly with them.
Try to get in touch with them via emails, Skype, Facebook and any other means. You should to build a list of clients that you can spend your efforts catering to, instead of artists that you’ll never hear from again.
It’s not easy to make a decent living online from selling beats, but definitely possible. Many people give up because they underestimated the amount of effort it takes.
